Paint Paint

When painting, Rob van Doeselaar uses tear-off palettes to prepare and mix his colours. He works the paint squeezed from the tubes with a brush or palette knife. As his paintings on canvas take shape, a fascinating landscape of color appears on the palette. The shapes and textures resemble those found in nature: in waves, mountain rock formations, or coral reefs. Instead of discarding the palettes after use, Rob studies them closely, looking for dynamic forms and compelling harmonies of color to inspire new work.

Paint is such a versatile and expressive medium. It can reproduce reality or evoke feelings of pain, sorrow, or joy. The possibilities are endless. What fascinates Rob is the transformation of paint on his palettes: when the interplay of colours, once just raw paste out of a tube, suddenly acquire meaning – like when marks on paper form letters or musical notes turn into a melody.
